ABOUT

Mlungisi Gegana is an acoustic bassist, electric bass player, band leader, composer, music arranger, music producer and session musician. He is widely versed in South African music idioms and has collaborated with some of the finest jazz musicians in South Africa. Gegana’s combos have graced the stages of South Africa’s major jazz festivals and premier live music venues.

"A mission to set the music free"

- Gwen Ansell, Mail and Guardian

Mlu, as he is familiarly known, has performed with South African and international musicians on local and global stages including France, Norway, Algeria and Mozambique. The most memorable of these performances was with Zim Ngqawana at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands. As a session bass player, Mlu has been featured on the gospel, pop, and traditional music albums of his peers and a younger generation of music artists. He often experiments with cross-cultural, cross-genre and cross-generational music.

Originally from the historical jazz hub of Queenstown, in the Eastern Cape, Gegana is rooted in African jazz traditions, but his approach to music-making is refreshingly versatile owing to his formal and informal music training. Gegana is well-tuned to South African musical heritage as well as an international jazz vernacular. His vision is influenced by the music of Gideon Nxumalo, Kippie Moeketsi, Johnny Dyani, Hotep Galeta, Allen Kwela, Bheki Mseleku, Duke Makasi and Mongezi Feza.

Mlu was previously signed to Gallo Records and is a member of the South African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO). To date Gegana has two jazz albums, “One Step Forward” and ‘I Am Who Am I’.
